Have you seen all the fabulous Wingding /dingbat fonts that are out there these days?
Some of the fonts make awesome cutting files.
Here’s a little step by step tutorial to make these cute Reindeer Gift Tags using one of these fonts.
First, download and install the font “wmanimals2” to your computer. Get it free here
Open up a new blank studio file and draw an oval shape. Drag it out to 5.5cm wide by 7.5cm high.
That’s about 2 1/4 inches by 3 inches, but it’s not too important – it can be any size you like 🙂
Or you can drag it to any size and make the adjustments to the desired size with the scale menu.
Draw another circle about 0.5 cm (1/4inch) big. Position it towards the top of the larger oval, group the two shapes together and in the Align menu click: Align Center.
Open the replicate window and duplicate the grouped shapes. We’re creating the backing shape now.
Select the duplicate shapes and open the offset menu, Select “Offset” and set the distance – I used the offset setting of 0.2mm and click apply – it looked like this:
Select the entire offset shape and click on the “ungroup selected objects” button down on the bottom left hand side of your screen. Then go back up to the offset shape and carefully select the large inside oval and hit delete. You should be left with a plain oval slightly larger than your original shape with a hole that lines up exactly with the hole in the original shape.
Select the text button from the top or left menu. On the right menu, select wmanimals2 font and type the lowercase letter “y” to create your reindeer head.
Double click the reindeer to create a bounding box around it and then drag it into the original oval and stretch it to the desired size. Line it all up with the “align center” command in the align menu.
All finished and ready to cut.
Remember that if you are cutting the front and the back in different coloured card, you will have to drag one of the shapes off the page temporarily and change the setting to “no cut” while you cut the other shape. Switch them over when you are ready to cut the other shape and change the cut settings back as required.
Hope you like the project and give it a try, Check out all the other options in the font too if a reindeer head is not your thing. I’d love to see pictures and hear your feedback too 🙂
