This plate would make a great gift for friends, neighbours or family. Just fill it up with some homemade cakes, biscuits or treats, wrap in cellophane and give away!
Such fun when, as the food is eaten, the Permanent Etched Doily Design and text is revealed. I used the Oppen 9inch/23cm plate from Ikea and it’s cheap as chips! I think I paid $1.50 here in Australia but it goes for 99 cents in the US.
How I did it.
I cut my design from Contact, but vinyl would work well too.ย The design is grouped together but I opted to ungroup it and cut the Doily and the text separately. Here’s the stencil, all ready and weeded, before I applied transfer paper and attached it to the plate.
I winged the placement but you could easily make registration marks on the underside of the plate with a marker pen to help line things up.ย The vinyl stencil is on the plate below and the text is ready for the transfer tape.
I burnished the Contact paper down really well……
and covered with a nice thick layer of Etching cream and left it to do it’s thing for a while.
When I was all done I scraped as much cream as I could back into the jar to reuse another time. I washed my plate and removed the Contact and this was the result…
The most challenging part of this project was getting a decent picture of the finished etched plate ๐ Aargh! all that reflection.
I’m sharing my File.
If you’d like to have a go at this, I’m sharing the file. Does the design look familiar? I adapted my Lacy Circular Card Design to make this doily.
Here’s the Silhouette Studio Version 3 File ( Test cut on this)

Haha, so funny! I love the doily design especially! It adds so much interest to the plate! I found that taking a picture of the glass was the hardest thing too. Great job!

The quote you used for your plate made me laugh. It sounds like something my son would say. I had no idea they had glass plates at IKEA were so cheap! I think I need to stock up and some of these as gifts! Thanks for sharing your cut file.
Pam says
Glad you like it Kelly. Yes, there’s definitely some treasures for us Crafters hiding in the Market Hall at Ikea!

Your dish turned out fabulous! I love the cheeky little saying too. This would make a great housewarming or new-neighbor gift….and I need to hit up an Ikea!! ๐
Pam says
Thanks Christine. Yes you’re right’- perfect for a neighbour gift or housewarming. I liked the saying too but it would be so easy to switch out too. I originally was thinking of along the lines of “Yum!”
Nelly says
Pam, such a great idea, as mentioned, the saying can be changed out for other occasions as well. Love the idea of the saying that people will see when the goodies are gone. Too bad IKEA is several hours away for me. But next time, I must stock up.
Pam says
Thanks Nelly, Shame out the Ikea being so far away though. I’m lucky – mine is 15 mins away, so the trip for a 99cents plate isn’t so bad!
Sandy Wootten says
Love this project. Since I’m new did you put stencil on the bottom of the plate?
I really enjoy your site Thanks for all the lovely projects you share
Pam says
Hi Sandy,
I put my stencil on the top surface of the plate. The etching is on the top.
There’s no reason why it couldn’t be done from the bottom though. The only thing is: you’d have to “mirror image” or flip the cutting file first. You can do that in the “Replicate” window, so the letters show up the correct way when viewed from the front on the finished plate.
Hope this helps
Pam
