I’m sure you’re all familiar with the ornate split letters that are so popular for monograms in the cutting world. You’ve probably seen some lovely examples of split shapes too.
Well I hope you like this week’s free file as it’s a Split Flourish shape – perfect for a name or any other text you wish to use to personalize it.
The Options
The original file I made was extremely delicate so I’ve also added an additional version that’s slightly more robust. If your cutting machine is playing nice you will probably manage the the delicate cut fine. If your cutter is having a bad day (as they do occasionally!) then go for the other version where I’ve thickened up the lines a bit. If cutting from Card stock the thicker version may be the way to go. I test cut both versions from vinyl and both worked really well. Here’s a side by side comparison.
I popped the delicate cut out on a Gift Bag. It’s my daughter’s Birthday today – {Yay! Happy Birthday Lauren} – not that she’ll get the bag, as she’s traveling at the moment and is currently enjoying Bolivia, so I’ll fill it up for her when she gets home.
I didn’t really have anything to put the other sample cut on. So the thicker version ended up adorning the file that I put our Tax papers in. Yes you read that right – I decorated a tax folder! I looked desperately around the house for some cute decor item to put the sample on that would be cool and trendy for the pics but nothing suitable jumped out at me …..so the tax folder it was. Here it is looking a lot fancier than the average tax folder. 😉
Credit Where Credit is Due.
My Tax folder was inspired by this quote: “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” by Benjamin Franklin
Dingbat fonts are such a rich source of files and inspiration. I downloaded Vintage Decorative Signs 7 which is free for personal use and the starting point for my design was the letter D. My design doesn’t resemble it much now as I added lots of elements and took some away and manipulated it a fair bit to get my final result but it was such a valuable starting point that I want to give it a shout out. Check out the other letters/shapes too, plenty of others would convert to make fabulous cut files too.

Beautiful designs. Thanks for all the wonderful ones you have posted. Could you explain about the optional weeding lines. I don’t understand how to use them. Thanks
Pam says
Thanks Eliece – glad you like them. Re the Weeding Lines or in this case – a weeding box: say for example you were cutting the design from a complete sheet of Letter size vinyl or even straight from the roll of vinyl: if when you removed the vinyl from the backing paper from around the outside edge of the design you would pull the vinyl off the entire sheet or roll which would be wasteful or awkward to weed and cut away. By “boxing” the design in it means you can weed the entire design inside and out but no additional vinyl is wasted. Excess can be cut from the roll or sheet and used for other projects.
One thing though, if you cut you piece of vinyl to approximately the right size in the first place you probably wouldn’t need the weeding box as you won’t have much wastage anyway.
In my second photo you can see where I used the weeding lines – If I had a larger piece of vinyl all that excess would be re-usable. As it was, I cut my vinyl only a little larger than my design, so I didn’t waste much vinyl anyway.
Hope I this explained it OK.
Here’s a good visual to watch by Kay Hall of CleverSomeDay. She adds multiple lines on a design to make the sections of vinyl waste smaller thus easier to weed.
Cheers
Pam

Thanks for the free design. Lovley idea to put it on a gift bag
Pam says
Thanks Anki.
I like using vinyl (or in this case Contact paper) It’s a cheap easy way to make stickers for gift wrap.

I think it would be encouraging to have a nice tax folder. Doing the tax return is something I hate doing but think of the satisfaction that once it’s done you have a pretty folder to put it in! Much less calorific too than the bowl of chocolate that’s usually my “carrot” 0;-D
Thanks for the idea and the file!

Thanks Maga,
Yes, I’m hoping it’ll encourage me to get my tax papers in order. – there a bit of a mess at the moment 🙂

Hi, I’ve happened across your website and I am absolutely loving the designs that you make for cutting on your silhouette. I’m just wondering if you ever share the designs as SVG files, rather than Silhouette Studio files. I, unfortunately, use a different machine, but would love to use some of your files that you give away. Thank you.
Pam says
Hi Samantha,
I’m sorry but at the moment I don’t offer SVGs, The Silhouette software won’t let me save the files except in their Native Silhouette Format.
Unfortunately I don’t have Illustrator or have time to learn it or another new program like inkscape etc that would allow me to do SVGs.
Hopefully one day that’ll change.

While I am disappointed, I can completely understand. I look forward to a time it ever happens, your designs are AMAZING!
Pam says
Thanks for understanding Samantha and your kind words.

I absolutely LOVE this design. I see you don’t have SVG files available, is it possible that you have a jpg file saved? I am able to convert the jpg to svg.

I’m travelling at the moment but I’ll do what I can when I get home in a month or so
Maureen Soaris says
love your files but keep getting the comment DNS address could not be found. Can you advise please?
Pam says
Hi Maureen,
The files are hosted in Dropbox and are set up to automatically download into your downloads folder, so it would be worth checking there to make sure they didn’t sneak in while you weren’t looking. If not you could try downloading them via a different browser. I just tested both posts you commented in and the files downloaded for me via Firefox. Another thing to try is to clear your cache.
If that all fails 🙁 Leave another comment in the posts telling me whether you want V2, V3, or SVG version of the cut files and I can email them to you instead 🙂
