I love those lyrics from the Louis Armstrong song – don’t you? I’ve been collecting a few examples on a Pinterest Board for a little while and wanted to put them on something to have around the house to remind me of the positive sentiment when I need it!
This month the perfect opportunity came up – I decorated a board with vinyl lettering which fitted in perfectly with The Silhouette Challenge theme of Home Decor and the optional theme of Wood.
I thought of stenciling the board, but decided on the quicker option of vinyl. To start, I did a bit of a trade with the husband. He cut and sanded back my board and in return I made him a custom vinyl sticker for his Camper Trailer! Win Win!
I’ve listed the steps below but didn’t take any “in progress” shots (sorry – I’m a bad blogger!)
- I gave the board a few coats of white acrylic. I used a very dry brush and each coat was quite thin, so I didn’t even wait between coats.
- To get the distressed edges, I used a sponge dauber. After loading up black ink from a stamp pad, I rubbed it against scrap paper to remove the excess ink until it was quite dry. Then I ran the sponge along the edges of the wood, adding a little extra ink in the corners until I was happy with the aged look. I was a little heavy handed in a couple of areas, so when I was finished I dry brushed more white over those bits to tone them down.
- I cut the sentiment from black matte vinyl with my Silhouette Machine. I used clear packing tape as my transfer material. I stuck it to my clothes a couple of times first to de-sticky it a little, {although this isn’t always practical: say, if you’re wearing a nice fluffy jumper – in that case a piece of lint free fabric like a linen Tea Towel would work better 🙂 }
- I overlapped strips of tape over the weeded design until it was covered. I like the tape – it’s clear so you can see through it which helps with placement.
- Once the design was on the board, I pulled the tape slowly back on itself. It came away easily and the vinyl behaved and stayed put on the wood.
The pics on this post are of the board positioned around the house, but it didn’t end up in any of these places – I now have it over a door way where I see it each morning as I head towards the kettle to make my morning cuppa. A Nice positive message to see as I start my day!

Pam, this is such a great project! I really like the final look – the black on white, the distressed edges, everything! And I LOVE the design…thanks so much for sharing the cut file!!
Thanks so much for your kind words Meredith 🙂
This turned out beautifully. Perfect font choices—dreamy and grounded. And I love the distressed look. What a great accompaniment to your morning cuppa!
Thanks Eff. I love that Ruhistly font – hope to use it for future projects too.
Aww, that’s so lovely! I love the song, but I really like the wonderfully ( 😉 ) positive message! It must make you smile every time you see it! You did a wonderful job. I, like you, prefer the faster method of vinyl haha.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Brittany, Yes, I like the message too – sometimes I don’t appreciate what’s around me – so it’s a gentle reminder 🙂
This is wonderful. This is the song that I danced to for our mother – son dance at his wedding in May. He chose this song and I loved every minute of dancing with him. I am going to make this as a wonderful reminder that the world is wonderful and our dance was so good.
What a great story Sarah. So glad this will help remind you of such a happy memory.
