I was after something to decorate the table outside on our patio. My first choice was a pot plant but as the patio is covered it wouldn’t get any rain and I wasn’t sure if I’d be reliable enough to water it regularly!
Luckily I had some “flowers” that would never need watering and decided to plant them instead and also give them a little encouragement by decorating the pot with a call to action!
In a previous life my flowers were aluminum salad servers. That came to an abrupt end after a stint in the dishwasher when the metal corroded rather badly. Although I didn’t want to serve food with them anymore, I couldn’t bring myself to throw them out, they were just too pretty!
My husband sprayed them with leftover Silver paint which hid most of the corrosion. I also had a black ceramic planter lying around too -it had no drainage holes so was pretty useless for real plants but was perfect for this project. I filled it with sand , then I cut a small piece of fake grass to fit the pot and planted the salad servers through it and into the sand. The grass covered the sand nicely.

I Decorated the pot using *Silver Glitter Vinyl with the word “Grow”, I replaced the letter “o” with a flower and added a couple of tufts of grass. I’m sharing the Cutting File Below too. Here’s a close up:

I used a few different resources to complete my design: The word is written in Arial which I stretched upwards a bit to make it taller. The flower is the Lowercase Letter C from the Gardenia Blooms Font which I’ve adapted to suit my design. The Tufts of Grass are the Lower Case letter A from The Border Bits Font by Kay Hall. This is a free font that Kay designed especially for die cutters. I haven’t included the Grass tufts in my free cutting file as sharing it may breach Kay’s copyright, but it’s freely available on her site for download if you want to swing by there and grab it yourself to complete the design.

What a cute and clever idea, Pam! Those salad servers are so pretty!
Thanks Emily, Yes, they were just too nice to check out!
This is so cute! I am horrible with remembering to water plants and this is a great idea 🙂
Thanks Brittany, Perfect for forgetful waterers like us 🙂
I love the salad servers. That would be a really cute idea for a Garden Wedding Shower centerpieces/gift.
Thanks MacKenzie. Yes, that’s a great idea!
Nice job! This is my kind of plant (considering I’m not the best when it comes to remembering to water them…). I’m glad you were able to repurpose something you loved so much even if it’s not in the same way it was meant for!
Thanks Sam, Yes, and this way I can enjoy them each day before they were in a drawer most of the times and only got out on the days we had a salad!
Oh, this is just adorable! I love the simplicity of it, and how you added the little flower for the ‘o’. And the glitter! Thanks for sharing the free file(s) too!
Thanks Christine. Yes I like the glittery vinyl. Luckily it showed up great against the black pot.
