This Tip is probably mostly suited to card makers. That’s because there’s a very good chance that the Cardmakers and Papercrafters among us will have the equipment needed for this.
Before acquiring their Silhouettes, many Papercrafters did their cutting with Die Cut Machines and Metal Dies. If that sounds like you and you have tons of metal dies in a dark corner of your craft room it’s time to dust them off and use up a few of your Vinyl and Printable foil scraps while you’re at it!
The following pictures show the things I’ve decorated using my die Cut platform (I have the Spellbinders platinum) along with some metal dies and scraps of various Silhouette and cutting machine supplies.
First, an upcycled tomato paste jar decorated with a Deer Scene. I die cut this from some Black Chalk board Vinyl I have. The jars could be used for Christmas Treats or as Tea Light holders. I love this Metal die – I want to use it on everything! LOL
Next I decorated a Glass Plate. I used scraps of leftover Silhouette Brand Frosted Vinyl. I applied it to the back of the plate and burnished it down with the back of a teaspoon. Although this isn’t permanent, if I just wipe down the front of the plate or hand wash gently, the decoration should last a fair while, and there’s no food safety issues as the decoration is on the back.
Another smaller Jar, This time I used scraps of Silhouette Brand Gold Vinyl.
You may recognize the pic below from last week’s Free File. I used Silhouette Printable Silver Foil and a snowflake Die for the silver snowflakes and the reflection lines on the card.
Some Extra Tips
I recommend testing out a material with a small die first to see if it works. Although the black, gold and frosted vinyl worked a treat, when I tried it with the pink glitter book covering material instead of cutting, it stretched the material. To fix this I ran it through the die cut platform with Baking Paper (parchment) either side of the Glitter Vinyl. This resulted in a decent cut.
I also got a great result with the Silhouette Printable foil. Because the snowflake was small it lost some of the adhesive on the back and I had to use additional glue to join it to the pink glitter jar card pictured above.
Next I want to try it with HTV. If you get round to experimenting with Dies and HTV before I get the chance, do leave a comment to let me know how you get on.
Hi I’m loving your jars , do you put the vinyl on the outside or the inside of the jar please?
Hi Carol,
Glad you like them 🙂 I put the vinyl on the outside. I haven’t tried putting it on the inside. Depending on the jar width and depth, doing it on the inside may get a bit fiddly. I’m all for making it easy on myself.😉
