Today I’m sharing a great little online resource that will see you churning out lots of Buffalo Check and Plaid Print and Cut designs for Christmas.
You may recall my post here where I made my own striped designs for Silhouette Studio, Well this is similar but I’m using a Tartan Maker Tool instead of the Stripe generator.
How To
We’re using an online tool….So, head on over to Tartan Maker.com. It’ll look something like this.
It’s pretty Simple to use. You can spend a few minutes making some tartan and check designs but if you want to make a buffalo check like mine do the following
- Move the Top Band 1 slider to the right Set it to 10.
- Click on the little colour box to the right of the slider – select Black
- Move the Middle Band Slider to 10
- Click on the little colour box to the right of the slider – select Red
- Click on the little x by the Bottom Band 3 to close it
- Move the Yarn Size Slider to the right to #3 – Click on the preview window
It’ll look like this:
Then download your design. It will be in png format and be tiny – that’s OK.
- Save it to your Desktop.
- Open Silhouette Studio and open your Library.
- Minimize the window so you can see both the library and the Buffalo Check/Plaid icon on your desktop.
- Look for the Pattern Folder and open it.
- Drag the check icon across from your Desktop into the Pattern Folder.
Now you’re all set to use the pattern in your Print and cut designs in the usual way.
Some inspiration
Here’s a little inspiration showing how I used my new patterns:
I made a fun Buffalo Check Christmas Tag by filling the tag shape with the Buffalo pattern and adding a reindeer design from my Silhouette library with some Text, both filled with white.
I made the Wrapping paper by making a black and white check in the Tartan maker. Exactly the same as the Buffalo check except I substituted white for the red. After dragging it into my Patterns in Studio, I drew a rectangle shape the same size as my printer paper and then filled it with the pattern. I adjusted the slider in the advanced fill tools until I was happy with the size of the check and printed it out.
For the Print below, I filled a Rectangle (which I sized to match my frame) with the black and white plaid pattern, then simply added a Reindeer Head from my Silhouette Library and some text, I filled with red and offset them in white. I printed it on photo paper and trimmed and framed it.
What I Used….

WOW! Thanks so much for showing how to do this. Seems buffalo check is fairly popular and new to me — to be able to make my own is fantastic.

Hi.
It won’t show me a preview. I followed all of your steps. What am I doing wrong?
Pam says
Hi Gina,
Do you mean it won’t show a preview in the Tartan Maker Application or when you drag it into Silhouette Studio?
Let me know and I’ll see if I can help.
Cheers
Pam.
